Cheers to National Drink A Beer Day!

If you’re a lover of ales and lagers, put a big star on September 28, because it’s National Drink a Beer Day! But what exactly is the difference between a stout and a porter, you ask? We’ve got the answers! Before you raise your glass and make a toast to your new favorite holiday, read on to learn about some of the most popular styles of beer and what makes them unique.

Light in flavor, alcohol content and color, lagers are a popular beer worldwide for their drinkability. Lagers pair well with American food, like a juicy hamburger and they also cool down your palate after a spicy meal. That’s why lagers are a favorite at football games and on hot summer afternoons.

    Amber Ale

Malty and medium-bodied, this style of beer gets its name from the amber color. You may notice a slight caramel flavor that pairs nicely with meat, fish and strongly flavored cheese. For a perfect pairing, serve an amber beer in a frosty mug and enjoy it with a bleu cheeseburger. Cheers to one of the most drinkable beers you can find!

    India Pale Ale (IPA)

India Pale Ales are known for their high hops content and are typically characterized by bitter, herbal and citrus notes. IPAs go well with meat, poultry and fish. Their bitterness also cuts rich flavors like those you find in Indian cuisine and creamy cheeses. IPAs are gaining popularity in the craft beer market and come in a wide variety of styles.

Dark color and a malty sweetness are characteristics of a porter. Though lighter than a stout, porters are one of the heavier beer styles and are best enjoyed in fall or winter temperatures. The hints of coffee and chocolate flavors make it a great beer to pair with barbecued meat.

This heavy, yet smooth beer is served in a tulip glass and has an indulgent quality. The malt creates strong coffee and chocolate flavors that are often enjoyed alongside heavy foods. Stouts also pair surprisingly well with oysters and chocolate. So whether you’re sipping your stout with hors d'oeuvres, a main course or dessert, you’re drinking it right!
